Obstetrics, Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine Specialist

Dr Hagai Avnet is an Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist (OBGYN), attending as a Fetal Medicine consultant at the Institute of O&G ultrasound and Fetal therapy at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer. He practices all aspects of obstetric ultrasound, including targeted organ scanning (Skirat Ma’arachot), nuchal translucency (Shkifut Orpit), amniocentesis, pregnancy care and follow up and fetal medicine consultations.

 
Dr Avnet grew up in New York, trained and studied In Sydney, and is English fluent. He is married and has three daughters, graduated with an MD degree from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, and completed his residency at Carmel Medical Center, Haifa. Dr Avnet also took part in a one-year mini-fellowship under Prof Simcha Yagel at Hadassah, Jerusalem, where he furthered his interest in ultrasound and has been ignited with the satisfaction of discovery, which has accompanied him ever since.


In 2014 Dr Avnet was accepted to a sub-specialty program in Sydney, Australia. This consisted of a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship and a PhD program. The clinical fellowship took place at the Royal Hospital for Women in which he specialized in caring for fetuses with anomalies, CMV in pregnancy and gained extensive experience in comprehensive ultrasound including 3D/4D imaging. In addition, he acquired unique skills for various invasive fetal therapies.


Dr Avnet’s PhD, conducted at the University of New South Wales, dealt with the evaluation of novel fetal cardiac function modalities. His research was very well accepted at the World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology – ISUOG and his studies were chosen for best oral communication award for the last four consecutive years. He published papers in top peer-reviewed journals and regularly teaches residents and students.


Since he returned to Israel in 2018, Dr Avnet holds a consultant position at the Fetal Medicine Unit at the O&G Ultrasound Institution at Sheba. He treats pregnancies with severe complications, performs ultrasound scans, and consults couples baring fetuses with anomalies, with intrauterine infections and multiple pregnancies. Dr Avnet performs invasive procedures for twin-twin transfusion syndrome (laser therapy), shunt insertions, fetal blood transfusions, selective fetal reduction and obviously many amniocentesis and Chorionic Villous Samplings (CVS).

Dr Avnet is leading several groundbreaking studies in the fetal cardiac function field and recently won a prestigious grant from General Electic company. He is part of an international experts’ group evaluating novel technologies for fetal cardiac function assessment.
